Every day in the United States 1,500 homes catch on fire. Each year 4,500 people die and 280, 000 are injured in residential fires. The majority of fire deaths occur at night, while everyone is asleep.
Smoke alarms are early warning systems to give you and your family time to escape should a fire start in your home. Fires move fast and every second counts. Every home should have at least one working detector per floor, per living space. If this doesn’t describe your home, it’s time to make a change.
Reading Fire Department can provide 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms and 9 volt replacement batteries free of charge to residents of single-family dwellings in the City of Reading and Village of Arlington Heights who cannot afford to purchase them or who are unable to safely perform these tasks.
Residents living in rental properties should contact their landlord for smoke alarms and/or batteries. All rental property owners are required by law to provide working smoke alarms in their properties.
